Pregnancy for women with epilepsy

Having a baby is an exciting time, full of wonderment, anticipation and joy. But for women with epilepsy, becoming pregnant and having a baby is a little more complicated.

Rest assured, however, most women with epilepsy will have successful pregnancies and deliver healthy babies.

The key to a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery is knowledge and early preparation. If you have epilepsy and you’re considering having a baby, it’s crucial to understand potential issues around pregnancy, such as:

  • getting medication right
  • understanding risks that can be avoided if you’re pregnant.

Not every woman wants to have a family, but regardless, all women who may be sexually active need to know about epilepsy and contraception. And that includes women who already have a family.

Information for medical professionals

Women with epilepsy must contend with different challenges than men with epilepsy. Women need to be able to discuss issues of concern with their healthcare provider, especially during their childbearing years.

Women may have questions about medication and reducing risk when it comes to:

  • contraception
  • planning a pregnancy
  • labour and delivery.
